    Andrew Pople CooganAndrew Pople began his career in 1983 with the Civil Service where he worked for seven months as a Research Officer before joining the Bank of England where he worked as a Supervisor.

    On leaving the Bank of England in 1988 he joined Abbey National plc and for three years worked as Strategic Planning Manager for Corporate Planning before becoming Executive Manager responsible for the project to establish Abbey National Life.

    In 1992, Andrew Pople became Regional Director for Central Region and in 1994 he was appointed Director, Life Assurance Division and Chief Executive, Scottish Mutual.

    In August 1996, he was appointed Managing Director, Retail Division and Chairman of Abbey National Life. From 1 January 1998 he also assumed responsibility for the General Insurance business.

    Retail Banking serves Abbey National's 15 million UK customer base, providing a wide range of personal financial products and services which include Mortgages, Savings, Investments, Banking and Insurance.

    The Abbey National Retail bank looks to provide its customers with a multi channel "clicks and bricks" approach to distribution through its Convenience Retailing strategy. This includes Branches, Telephone Banking, Internet Banking, Digital TV, WAP, ATM's and Third Party Alliances.

    The Abbey National Retail Bank is changing the face of banking with its innovative approach to branch design, InStore coffee shops and most recently the announcement of Franchising within its Branch Network.
