  • EUROCATALYST 2002: LIVE FROM MADRID
WILL EUROPEAN MORTGAGE MARKETS SURVIVE GLOBALISATION?
    22-24 SEPTEMBER
EuroCatalyst launched the first annual event in 2002, in Madrid, at the Westin Palace, which we were told was the only place to hold an event in the glamourous Spanish capital. The event and its 279 participants stood strong and proud as we took them into new, uncharted territory, including the unexplored world of funding convergence, better known as the art of bringing together structured finance and covered bonds in a way that would produce the best of both worlds. The event kicked off with a ...

WELCOME RECEPTION AT THE MUSEUM THYSSEN-BORNEMISZA (September 22)
EuroCatalyst 2002 guests were invited to a very special evening that epitomized the world-class elegance and sophistication of Spain. Sponsored by Confederación Española de Cajas de Ahorros (Spanish Savings Banks Confederation), the evening began with a private, guided tour of the world-famous Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, followed by cocktails among eight centuries of magnificent painting and sculpture.

    ESTHER DYSON KEYNOTE ADDRESS
Globalisation, technology and the future of national market structures (September 23)
Esther Dyson, an economist by education, is recognized as the catalyst in the creation of the personal computing and Internet industry. Dyson is the chairman of EDventure Holdings, publisher of the influential monthly technology-industry newsletter, Release 1.0, and sponsors two premier annual conferences, PC (Platforms for Communication) Forum in the U.S. and EDventure's High-Tech Forum in Europe. She is a popular speaker at major industry events around the world including the World Economic Forum in Davos, Comdex, the Aspen Institute and the Harvard Millennium Summit, and appears frequently as a commentator on CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, the BBC and Wall Street Journal TV. When Esther Dyson speaks, entire industries respond - in 1994, Dyson wrote about the impact of the Internet on intellectual property which led to, among other things, why Bill Gates now plans to offer software as an online service. As an active investor and commentator, she focuses on emerging technologies and business models, emerging markets (Eastern Europe) and emerging companies. Dyson has devoted her life to discovering the inevitable and promoting the possible, which made her the perfect speaker to open the event. Dyson was, in fact, the model and catalyst for EuroCatalyst 2002 itself. Dyson spoke on globalisation, technology and the future of national market structures.

    TAMARA ADLER KEYNOTE ADDRESS
The future of capital markets: how European lenders can avoid being left behind (September 24)
Tamara Adler is one of Europe's structured finance pioneers, having made unparalleled advances for the European MBS industry in the late 1990s with synthetic structures. Due to her historic role in the development of European MBS markets, we asked Tamara to return to the European mortgage industry to reflect on the future of European mortgage lending in the context of capital market structures. Tamara keynoted Day 2, introducing the session on European mortgage-backed securities. We were privileged and honored to have her at our inaugural event and appreciated her efforts to support EuroCatalyst and the European mortgage lending industry despite her emeritus status.
